Medifast liquid diet

Tuesday, June 26, 2007 by Dr. Manny

The Medifast diet is actually much more than a liquid diet. Even thought the Medifast shakes are the cornerstone of the diet, Medifast has many more products that would not be considered in a liquid form. These Medifast products include the Medifast bars, soups, oatmeal, chili, etc. If a person would prefer to be on a liquid diet, it is still possible to do this using only the Medifast shakes.

Medifast shakes

The delicious Medifast shakes are the cornerstone of the Medifast diet. The Medifast shakes come in six flavors; Dutch Chocolate, French Vanilla, Strawberry Creme, Orange Creme, Banana Creme, and Swiss Mocha. The Medifast shakes are made in two forms, one for women and one for men. The Medifast 55 shakes are designed for women and the Medifast 70 shakes for men. As the numbers imply, this is the amount of protein a person will take in from eating the recommended five shakes per day. The Medifast shakes can also be used very easily in a maintenance program by incorporating two or three Medifast shakes a day in place of other meals or shacks.

BeSlim Club Rewards program quirk

Tuesday, June 19, 2007 by Dr. Manny

Hello everybody. I just wanted to let you know about a little quirk that I have noticed in the Medifast/TSFL BeSlim auto ship program. I talked with the people at Medifast concerning one of my customers and the discount that was given to them on their last order of Medifast. Well, it turns out that if you stop your auto shipment of Medifast products anytime during a twelve month period for two or more months, you revert back to the 5% discount rather than any higher discount that you had earned up to that point on your order of Medifast products.

Dieting and Fats

Monday, June 11, 2007 by Dr. Manny

Well it is time for us to discuss dieting and the consumption of fats in the diet. One of the basic reasons most people gain weight and become obese is the overall consumption of too much fat and therefore too many calories in their diets. Medifast products allow us to lose weight in a healthy manner while restricting calories from fat.

Just what is fat? Fat is composed of fatty acids bonded together to form long chains. We have all heard of saturated and unsaturated fats. Just what is the difference? Saturated fatty acids do not contain any double bonds or other functional groups along the chain. The term "saturated" refers to the placement of hydrogen atoms along the chain. Unsaturated fatty acids are of similar form, except that one or more alkenyl functional groups exist along the chain, with each alkene substituting a singly-bonded " -CH2-CH2-" part of the chain with a doubly-bonded "-CH=CH-" portion (that is, a carbon double bonded to another carbon). Too complicated for the normal person to delve into. Medifast products take all this into consideration and make it easy. A trans configuration, by contrast, means that the next two carbon atoms are bound to opposite sides of the double bond. As a result, they don't cause the chain to bend much, and their shape is similar to straight saturated fatty acids. We have all heard about how trans fats are bad and we should limit the intact of them because they will contribute to the development of heard disease. That is right! They do. Now let's get back to fatty acids.

Our bodies can make most of the fatty acids we need. The human body can produce all but two of the fatty acids it needs. These two, linoleic acid (LA) and alpha-linolenic acid (LNA), are widely distributed in plant oils. Since they cannot be made in the body from other substrates and must be supplied in food, they are called essential fatty acids. The Medifast diet, utilizing the Medifast 5 and 1 plan, gives you all you need. In the body, essential fatty acids are primarily used to produce hormone-like substances that regulate a wide range of functions, including blood pressure, blood clotting, blood lipid levels, the immune response, and the inflammation response to injury infection.

As alway, the key to good dieting is good nutrition.

Meifast products, Dieting and Carbohydrates

Friday, June 8, 2007 by Dr. Manny

Let's talk about carbohydrates, or carbs as we like to call them, and dieting. There is always lots of discussion about low-carb or no-carb diets. Many of the most popularized diet fads have promoted low carb dieting. First let me tell you, that your body is designed to use carbs as the main energy source, not fat and certainly not protein. Medifast products take this into consideration. Carbohydrates are the most abundant biological molecules, and fill numerous roles in living things, such as the storage and transport of energy (starch, glycogen) and structural components (cellulose in plants, chitin in animals). Additionally, carbohydrates and their derivatives play major roles in the working process of the immune system, fertilization, pathogenesis, blood clotting, and development. Carbohydrates require less water to digest than proteins or fats and are the most common source of energy. Proteins and fat are vital building components for body tissue and cells, and thus it could be considered advisable not to deplete such resources by necessitating their use in energy production. Medifast prevents this depletion. Carbohydrates are not essential nutrients: the body can obtain all its energy from protein and fats, but the human brain cannot utilize fat energy. The brain can use glucose derived from the deamination of protein and this is what goes on if you do not get some carbs when you are losing weight. This is very bad because it depletes your lean muscle and makes it harder to stay thin once you are done dieting. Medifast helps prevent this by supplying you with adequate carbs and protein throughout the day. Carbohydrates, like proteins, contain 4 kilocalories per gram while fats contain 9 kilocalories and alcohol contains 7 kilocalories per gram. Medifast contains no alcohol products at all.

Foods that are high in carbohydrates: Breads, pastas, beans, potatoes, bran, rice and cereals. This distinction between "good carbs" and "bad carbs" is a large part of the low-carbohydrate diets, which in general promotes a reduction in the consumption of grains and starches in favor of vegetables, thereby reducing the high insulin levels that cause fat storage, and increasing the burning of body fat for energy through ketosis. Medifast products allow the body to go after fat stores for energy while providing the body with adequate carbs and sparing your lean muscle. Medifast is ideal.

Medifast, Protein and dieting

Monday, June 4, 2007 by Dr. Manny

I am sure that we are all aware of the emphasis that has been placed on consuming protein by many of the popularized diets over the past several years. The Atkins diet is certainly the one that comes to mind. The Medifast diet also places an emphasis on protein, but also takes into consideration the other important sources of energy, such as carbohydrates. Let's discuss just what protein is, how do we get it and why it is important.

Protein comes to us from several different sources including the meat we eat, plants, and milk products. Medifast products contain ample protein while still supplying our body with enough carbohydrates so our brains function normally. Protein is made up of amino acids. There are twenty amino acids in all. Eight are considered Essential amino acids. These essential amino acids need to be obtained through food intake. The body cannot normally produce these amino acids itself. That is why they are considered essential. Medifast contains all the necessary essential amino acids you need on a daily basis. The remainder of the twenty amino acids can be manufactured in our bodies. The body hooks together amino acids using what is called a peptide bond to form proteins. This is done in our cells according to a genetic blueprint for that specific protein. Cool huh? Contrary to popular belief, we can get all the needed essential amino acids from plants, but it is rather difficult to do. Meat is easier, and Medifast is easier still.

Our bodies can actually use protein for energy by doing what is called deamination. This process produces carbon dioxide and urea and this is why our urine sometimes smells funny when we have been eating large amounts of meat. With Medifast, you still get plenty of protein, but you do not go overboard. The problem with using protein as an energy source instead of carbohydrates is that protein is a relatively poor energy source. The other major problem is in dieting. IF your body is not getting enough carbohydrates while you diet, it will go after your lean muscle for energy. This is very bad. Your lean muscle is your most metabolically active tissue and it is what helps keep you thin. The Medifast diet helps prevent loss of lean muscle while you lose weight by supplying us with enough carbohydrates and enough protein. It is for this specific reason that I don't like the Atkins diet. Your body needs some carbohydrates, and good ones, in order to run correctly. Medifast supplies what you need to have complete nutrition while losing weight. Medifast works!

As always, "The key to good dieting is good nutrition."
